8 Foot Fly Rod Fishing Kits

Wild Water's 8-foot fly rod kits are built for anglers who fish tighter, smaller water where a standard 9-foot rod gets in the way. Starting at $114, each kit ships with a matched IM8 graphite rod, pre-spooled reel, flies, tools, and a hard tube case, all ready to fish from day one. This page covers what's in each kit, how to choose between them, and why buying as a kit saves you close to $95 compared to piecing it together yourself.

The Best 8-Foot Fly Rod Kits from Wild Water

Wild Water offers two 8-foot kits at different accessory levels. Both use the same rod and reel. The difference is in what comes with them, and how much runway you want before your first restock run.

  • Standard Fly Fishing Kit | 5wt | 8ft | 4-piece, $114 (down from $200): The right choice for beginners and any angler who wants a complete, no-fuss setup. Ships with 9 flies, one spare leader, and essential tools. Backed by Wild Water's lifetime rod warranty.
  • Deluxe Fly Fishing Kit | 5wt | 8ft | 4-piece, $130 (down from $250): Same rod and reel as the Standard with double the flies, a 30-meter 5X tippet spool, stainless steel forceps, and a second spare leader. The tippet spool alone retails for around $10 and the forceps add another $9.75, so the Deluxe pays for its $16 premium immediately.

What's Inside Both Kits

Both kits share the same rod, reel, rod case, and fly box. Wild Water has been designing and testing these kits since 2006, and every component is selected to work together straight out of the tube. Fly counts and accessories are the only differences between the two.

The Rod

Standard and Deluxe kits use the same 8-foot, 5-weight, 4-piece IM8 graphite rod. At 4.0 ounces it casts all day without arm fatigue. The medium-fast action gives you a snappy feel in tight quarters with enough tip flex to protect light tippet when a fish runs. The 7-inch cork handle holds up in cold, wet conditions, and the stainless steel guides with a silicon carbide stripper insert reduce line wear across thousands of casts. Each section is 25.625 inches long, so the whole rod fits in the included 27-inch hard tube case.

The Reel

The 85mm die-cast aluminum reel arrives pre-spooled with chartreuse WF-5F floating fly line, 20-pound orange backing, and a 9-foot 5X tapered leader already attached. You thread the line through the guides, tie on a fly, and fish. The adjustable disc drag gives you a smooth range of resistance for trout, panfish, and small bass.

The Rod Case and Bag

The 27-inch hard tube case holds the rod, reel, fly box, and all accessories in one shoulder bag. It comes with a reel pouch, a zippered side storage pouch, a carry strap, and a hang ring. Each rod section slides into a 4-section cloth bag with ties before going into the hard tube.

The Fly Box and Flies

The waterproof floating fly box measures 4" wide x 6" long x 1.5" high and holds up to 372 flies in a custom foam design. If it goes in the water, it floats back to you and the flies stay dry. The included flies cover the patterns that produce fish immediately. The remaining capacity is room to add patterns as your skills and collection grow.

Standard Kit Flies (9 total)

The Standard ships with 3 each of the Size 12 Parachute Adams, Size 12 Black Winged Ant, and Size 12 Tungsten Bead Head Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear Nymph. The Adams imitates mayflies and caddisflies and works on most North American trout streams. It is one of the few patterns that fishes well across seasons and water types. The Ant draws strikes from trout and panfish all season, especially on warm afternoons when other patterns go quiet. The Hare's Ear fishes below the surface and is one of the most consistent trout producers in freshwater.

Deluxe Kit Flies (18 total)

The Deluxe ships with the same three patterns at 6 of each. Same proven selection, twice the supply.

Which 8-Foot Fly Rod Kit Is Right for You

The 8-foot length sits between the short, light rods built for tight brushy creeks and the longer rods built for big rivers. Here is how it compares to the rest of the lineup so you can confirm it matches your water before you buy.

The 8ft 5wt is the right call for small to medium streams, ponds, wooded banks with overhead cover, and backpacking trips where a longer rod is awkward to carry. It handles trout, panfish, and small bass.

If you fish open rivers where casting distance matters more than maneuverability, the 9ft fly fishing kits will serve you better. If you mostly fish ultra-tight brushy creeks under 15 feet wide, a 3-weight or 4-weight in a shorter length is the more precise tool.

For steelhead, larger bass, pike, or any saltwater species, you need a heavier setup in the 7-weight range or above. For a deeper look at matching rod length and weight to your fishing situation, see the fly rod selection guide.

Why Buy the Kit Instead of Piecing It Together

Pricing fly fishing gear out component by component takes hours and the parts often arrive mismatched. The 8ft rod runs $75 on its own. The pre-spooled reel is $50. The rod case adds $40, the fly box another $14.99, and the 9-fly assortment $11.75. Add a spare leader at $1.83, a retractable zinger at $6, and the nail knot and line nipper combo at $9, and you are at $208.57 before you have put anything together.

The Standard Kit is $114. That is roughly $95 in savings, and the line nipper and hook eye cleaner built into the combo tool are not sold separately at Wild Water, so the cost difference is even larger than the headline number shows. For a full comparison of what is included at each price point across Wild Water's lineup, see the fly fishing starter kit guide.

The Deluxe adds 9 more flies, a 30-meter 5X tippet spool, a second spare leader, forceps, and a second zinger. Those additions run about $39 separately. At $130, the Deluxe saves around $118 versus sourcing the same gear piece by piece.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an 8-foot fly rod good for beginners?

An 8-foot fly rod is a good choice for beginners fishing small streams and ponds. It is shorter and lighter than a standard 9-foot rod, which makes casting easier to learn. The 5-weight setup handles trout, panfish, and small bass, and works just as well for experienced anglers on tight water.

Can I set this kit up for left-handed casting?

Yes, the reel converts from left to right-hand retrieve in about two minutes without any tools. The reel ships in left-hand configuration, meaning you hold the rod in your right hand and crank with your left. Reversing it lets you hold the rod in your left hand and reel with your right.

Why does the fly box hold 372 flies but only ship with 9 (Standard) or 18 (Deluxe)?

The kit ships with the three patterns that catch fish across the widest range of conditions. The box holds 372 flies so you can add patterns over time as you learn what works on your local water. Most anglers build their collection gradually rather than buying every pattern at once.

What warranty comes with the rod and kit?

Wild Water backs the fly rod with a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. If the rod or its ferrules fail under normal fishing conditions, contact Wild Water for a repair or replacement. The rest of the kit is covered by a 30-day return policy on unused items in original condition.
