Clouser Minnow Flies

Clouser Minnow flies are weighted baitfish streamers (flies that imitate small fish and are fished below the surface) built to sink fast, ride hook-point-up, and draw strikes from bass, trout, striped bass, redfish, and pike in both fresh and saltwater. Wild Water Fly Fishing has been hand-inspecting and shipping Clouser Minnows since 2006. Every fly in this collection arrives ready to fish, in the colors, weights, and sizes that actually produce fish.

What Is a Clouser Minnow Fly?

Bob Clouser designed the original Clouser Minnow in 1987 on the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. He tied weighted dumbbell eyes (small, hourglass-shaped weights made of lead or brass) onto the hook shank so the fly would ride hook-point-up. That design keeps the hook clear of rocks and wood on the bottom, making the Clouser far more snag-resistant than most streamer patterns.

The hook-point-up angle also makes the fly look exactly like a baitfish moving through the water. The weighted eyes create a jigging motion on the retrieve, where stripping (pulling in line) causes the fly to dart, then drop on the pause. Most strikes happen on that drop. Fly fishing legend Lefty Kreh claimed to have caught over 87 species on the Clouser Minnow and called it the one fly he would choose above all others anywhere in the world.

Light vs Heavy Clouser Minnows

Eye weight controls sink rate, depth, and which species you can target effectively. Light Clouser Minnows carry smaller dumbbell eyes and hold at mid-depth, making them the right pick for trout in shallow freshwater runs and clear water. Heavy Clousers carry larger eyes and drop fast to the bottom. Use them for bass and pike holding near structure, and for saltwater species like redfish and sea trout feeding on the bottom in tidal water.

Clouser Minnow Fly Tying Kits

Wild Water offers tying material kits for the Chartreuse Clouser Minnow Size 1/0 and the Red Clouser Minnow. Both include all materials needed and pair well with our Red Clouser Minnow tying video on YouTube. Tying your own lets you adjust hook size, eye weight, and color to match your water and target species.

Clouser Minnow Flies FAQs

What is the best Clouser Minnow color for stained water?

Red, chartreuse, and purple and white produce best in stained or off-color water. High-contrast colors give fish a visible target when visibility is low. Red draws aggressive reactions from bass and striped bass in muddy conditions. Chartreuse holds up across nearly all clarity levels and is the most reliable fallback when water conditions change throughout the day.

How do you fish a Clouser Minnow?

Bob Clouser's original retrieve, the Susquehanna Strip, uses long pulls of 3 to 4 feet with a hard acceleration at the end. The fly stops and drops on the weighted eyes. Most strikes happen on that drop. Vary strip length and speed to find what fish want that day. Slower retrieves with longer pauses work best in cold water.

Is a Clouser Minnow a good fly for beginners?

Yes. The Clouser requires no hatch-matching, no precise timing, and no complex presentation. Cast it out, let it sink, strip it back, and pause. The hook-up design limits snags on rocky bottoms, which means fewer lost flies while you build your skills. It is one of the best first streamer patterns for anyone new to fly fishing.

What rod weight do I need to fish Clouser Minnow flies?

Use a 5-weight or 6-weight rod for smaller Clousers targeting freshwater bass and trout. Step up to a 7-weight through 9-weight for larger patterns and saltwater species. Heavier weighted eyes demand a rod with enough backbone to turn over the fly cleanly on the cast.
