Dry flies are the classic fly of fly fishing. Watching your dry fly float above the current of a pristine mountain trout river is the top experience of fly fishing. No doubt if you are thinking about fly fishing you are thinking about these flies. No matter where you live, don't go out and fly fish without taking a few dry flies with you. Generally, dry flies have four parts. The hackle, the wing, the body and the tail. The hackle and the tail help to keep the flies floating while they are fished. Dry flies are floated on top of the water and are intended to imitate an insect that is floating on the surface of the water. They look like an easy meal for a hungry fish. However, the name is deceiving to some people. A dry fly isn't unsinkable. To the contrary, they take on water after a short time and begin to sink. They sink a little at first and once saturated they sink fairy quick. Don't let this discourage you! A sinking dry fly fished just under the surface can sometimes be a good approach. If you want your dry fly to keep floating, you can simply get them out of the water and whip them around with a few false casts. This shakes off the water that has soaked in. Try dry flies for trout and panfish. The best part about dry fly fishing is watching a big fish take your fly from the surface of the water.
