Trout Fly Assortments

Trout flies are artificial lures tied to imitate the insects and baitfish trout feed on, matched to conditions and presented on a fly rod. Wild Water ties every pattern in this collection on Daiichi and Tiemco hooks, selected by fishing situation so you can match the right fly to the water you're fishing.

Featured Trout Fly Assortments

The five assortments below cover the widest range of trout fishing situations, from all-season all-water boxes to focused specialty selections. Each assortment ships with the flies already loaded in a fly box, ready to fish. If you already know which pattern you need, individual 6-packs start at $11.10 and are listed further down the page.

The Mega Fly Assortment covers every trout fishing situation from opening day through fall. $87.40 delivers 120 flies across 20 field-tested patterns in sizes 10-16. The selection spans all four fly types used in trout fishing: dry flies (adult insect imitations that float on the surface), nymphs (subsurface larva imitations), streamers (baitfish imitations), and attractors (high-visibility patterns for fast water). At $0.73 per fly with the box included, the Mega Fly Assortment costs about a third of building the same selection from individual 6-packs.

If you're fishing a few times a month and still learning what your local water responds to, start with the Mini Mega Fly Assortment at $49.95. The Mini Mega Fly Assortment includes 3 of each of the same 20 patterns as the Mega, so you can lose a fly to a snag and keep fishing without running short.

Fast, broken water calls for a different approach. Trout in rough current don't have time to inspect a fly closely, which is exactly what the Attractor Assortment addresses. Wild Water designed the Attractor Assortment for high-floating visibility over precise imitation. $41 delivers 42 patterns including Royal Wulff, Stimulator, and Humpy in sizes 10-14.

Trout feed below the surface about 80% of the time, which makes nymphing the most consistently productive technique across all seasons. At $18, the Nymph Assortment delivers 24 flies across the 4 subsurface patterns that account for most nymph fishing situations: Bead Head Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear (size 14), Olive Electric Caddis (size 16), Bead Head Purple Prince Nymph (size 14), and Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear Nymph (size 12).

The Wooly Bugger is a marabou streamer pattern and one of the most reliable trout flies ever tied. The Wooly Bugger imitates baitfish and leeches below the surface and draws strikes from larger trout that have stopped chasing insects. The Wooly Bugger Assortment includes 36 flies in black, olive, brown, and crimson in size 10, including bead head versions for deeper runs and pools, all for $40.50.

Why an Assortment Beats Building Your Own Box

Building a 120-fly box from individual 6-packs costs around $233 in flies alone, at $11.65 per pack average, plus roughly $15 for a large double-sided fly box. The combined cost reaches approximately $248. The Mega Assortment delivers the same 120 flies with the double-sided fly box included for $87.40, a savings of around $160. Wild Water has field-tested these specific patterns on moving water since 2006. Each assortment reflects the patterns that generated consistent catch results across seasons, not internal marketing criteria.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Wild Water flies hand-tied or machine-made?

Wild Water hand-ties every fly on Daiichi and Tiemco hooks using traditional tying materials. The Parachute Adams uses a calf tail post and mixed grizzly and brown hackle, not synthetic substitutes. The Elk Hair Caddis uses natural elk hair for the wing, which floats better in broken water than synthetic alternatives. Hand-tied construction on Daiichi and Tiemco hooks produces better flotation, consistent shape after multiple catches, and hook strength that handles trout up to 20 inches.

What is Wild Water's return policy for flies?

Wild Water accepts returns on unused flies within 30 days of purchase. Contact the team at 585-967-3474 or info@wildwaterflyfishing.com for incorrectly tied patterns, missing materials, or hook defects. Orders placed before noon EST ship the same business day from Wild Water's New York warehouse. Standard ground shipping is free on all orders.

Are Wild Water trout flies barbless?

Wild Water ties most trout flies on standard barbed hooks. If you're fishing catch-and-release water or a water body that requires barbless hooks by regulation, pinch the barb flat with hemostats or needle-nose pliers before fishing. Pinching the barb takes about 5 seconds per fly and does not affect hook strength or the fly's appearance in the water.

Can these trout flies be used for other species?

Yes. Wooly Buggers, nymphs, and attractor patterns consistently produce bass, panfish, and pike in addition to trout. The Wooly Bugger in size 10 catches smallmouth bass and larger panfish in warm-water ponds and rivers using the same slow-strip retrieve used for trout. Attractor patterns in sizes 10-14 trigger strikes from bluegill and perch in still water when fished with a gentle twitch on the surface. Dry flies in sizes 12-14 target trout specifically and rarely trigger strikes from bass or panfish.
