Striper Fly Patterns: Clousers, Deceivers, Eel Flies, and Poppers
Four pattern families cover the full range of striper situations. Pick the one that matches your water below, or start with the Chartreuse Clouser if you are not sure.
- Clouser Minnow, Size 8 | Chartreuse | Qty. 6 at $13.20: The hook rides point-up on every strip, which means it clears rocks, pilings, and weeds instead of snagging them. At $2.20 per fly across six per pack, you can fish aggressively into structure without counting your losses.
- Deceiver size 2/0 | Yellow and Red | Qty. 3 at $13.20: Long bucktail and saddle hackle create a baitfish profile that swims through the water column, making it the right call when stripers are pushing bait near the surface rather than holding on the bottom. Yellow and red holds up in surf conditions and stained water at $4.40 per fly.
- Long Tail Sand Eel, Size 1/0 | Brown | Qty. 3 at $13.50: Northeast striper fishing from July through November runs heavily on eels, and no baitfish imitation covers that scenario the way this fly does. The long tail undulates at slow strip speeds on a sink-tip fly line, matching how live eels move through tidal water, at $4.50 per fly.
- Large Foam Popper Fly Assortment | 12 Flies | Fly Suitcase at $56.00: Twelve Size 4/0 foam poppers in six colors — chartreuse, black, orange, white, blue and white, and black and chartreuse — arrive loaded in Wild Water's Small Fly Suitcase (11 x 8.25 x 2.5 inches), covering every surface fishing condition in one purchase. That is 14% off the original $65.00 with storage included.
- Big Flies for Big Fish Mega Fly Assortment | 60 Flies | Fly Suitcase at $120.00: Sixty large-profile flies spanning striper, pike, and saltwater patterns in Wild Water's Large Fly Suitcase, covering freshwater and saltwater species without a second purchase. Saves $10.90 off the original $130.90.
Which Striper Fly Matches Your Water?
Start with the Chartreuse Clouser in Size 8 or 1/0 if you are new to striper fly fishing. It covers the most situations across the most types of water and works on a 7, 8, or 9-weight rod without any adjustment.
In freshwater tailwaters and reservoirs, a Size 8 Chartreuse or Brown and White Clouser matches river baitfish at a weight that fishes cleanly on a 7 or 8-weight rod. Move into tidal rivers and channels with strong current and you need more weight to get down fast: the Heavy Clouser or Deep Diving Demon Clouser (a heavily weighted variant with extra-large dumbbell eyes) in Sizes 1/0 and 2/0 gets to the bottom where stripers stack behind structure and bridge pilings.
Out in open water and surf, switch to the Deceiver in Sizes 2 or 2/0. Strip hard and pause. The long profile pushes water and imitates a fleeing baitfish in the wave zone. If fish are feeding on top in calm inshore bays or estuaries at dawn or dusk, foam poppers in Size 4/0 are the call, and the cupped head creates an audible pop that pulls stripers up from depth.
Night fishing and eel-heavy tidal water are their own situation entirely. Fish the Long Tail Sand Eel or Candy Eel in Size 1/0 slow and near the bottom, and pause longer than feels comfortable. If you are covering multiple scenarios in one trip, the 12-fly Foam Popper Assortment handles six surface color situations and the 60-fly Mega Assortment spans striper, pike, and saltwater species in a single organized suitcase.
What These Flies Cost Compared to a Fly Shop
A single Clouser Minnow at a fly shop runs $4.50 to $5.95. A single Deceiver in the same sizes runs $4.95 to $7.50. Buy six Clousers at those prices and you are spending $27 to $36 before you have even walked to the water.
Wild Water's 6-pack Chartreuse Clouser (Size 8) costs $13.20, which works out to $2.20 per fly. The 6-pack Chartreuse Clouser in Size 1/0 runs $14.50, or $2.42 per fly. Both ship free from New York, same business day, which also cuts out the drive to the fly shop.
The savings scale up with the assortments. Thirty flies at a typical fly shop price of $5.00 each adds up to $150.00 minimum. Wild Water's 30-fly assortment with a fly suitcase costs $79.00. That is a difference of $71.00 or more, with organized storage included.
