How to Switch Reel from Left to Right (Spinning) & Change Fly Reel Retrieve

Need to switch your reel from left to right hand retrieve? On spinning reels, move the handle to the opposite side (unscrew dust cap → move handle → replace cap). On fly reels, flip the one-way clutch bearing inside the spool, then respool backing and line toward the frame. On baitcasters, choose left or right models; the handle doesn't switch.

Proper retrieve direction prevents hand-switching and improves casting efficiency during fishing sessions.

Spinning vs Fly vs Baitcaster: Which Method to Use

Spinning reel: Unscrew dust cap → move handle to opposite side → replace cap (1–2 minutes). Fly reel: Remove spool → flip clutch bearing (spool- or spindle-mounted) → verify one-direction → respool.

Baitcaster: Choose left/right model; switching isn't supported, so swap rod hands instead.

Understanding the differences between reel types helps you choose the right setup. Learn more about Different Types of Fly Reels and their mechanisms to make informed decisions for your fishing style.

Which Hand Should You Use to Reel?

Use your non-dominant hand to reel. Right-handed casters reel left; left-handed casters reel right for smoother transitions between casting and retrieving. This setup lets you cast with your dominant hand while reeling with your non-dominant hand, avoiding the awkward hand-switching that can cost you fish.

Start beginners with whatever feels natural, if you're teaching fly fishing to someone new. You can always adjust the retrieve direction later as their technique develops. Check our Complete Beginner's Guide to Fly Fishing for more getting-started tips that build confidence on the water.

How to Change Wild Water Fly Reel Retrieve (Spool-Mounted Clutch)

how to switch reel from left to right

Remove clip/cap, flip the clutch bearing, and reinstall before replacing the spool. All Wild Water reels, including our CNC aluminum and die-cast models, use a one-way clutch bearing system that makes this process straightforward.

  1. Remove the spool from the frame by holding back the quick-release lever below the reel handle. (Wild Water reels don't require removing the drag knob, so our quick-release system keeps things simple.)

  2. Look inside the spool for a six-sided clutch bearing held by either a hexagonal clip or screw cap.

  3. Remove the bearing housing:

    • Screw cap: Simply unscrew it
    • Hexagonal clip: Use a small flathead screwdriver to lift one end from the tabs (keep your fingers nearby to catch it)
  4. Flip the spool over and the bearing housing will drop out.

  5. Reinstall by flipping the bearing to change hand retrieve, then replace the screw cap or hexagonal clip.

How to Switch Wild Water Fly Reel from Right to Left (Spindle-Mounted Clutch)

Loosen drag, slide out retaining clip, flip clutch bearing, and reassemble the washer/shim stack carefully.

  1. Loosen the drag knob completely to remove tension on the retaining clip.

  2. Slide out the small clip from the groove using a flathead screwdriver (cover with your hand to prevent loss).

  3. Remove the washer and any shims under the clip, keeping them in order.

  4. Flip the clutch bearing so the opposite side faces down (don't disturb the sliding shaft or drag discs).

  5. Reinstall washers, shims, and clip in the original order.

Respool Your Backing and Fly Line Correctly

Tighten drag fully and reel so line stacks toward the frame: add backing first, then fly line.

After switching your fly reel retrieve direction, you'll need to completely respool:

  1. Remove all fly line and backing from the spool (wind around another reel or large can to prevent tangling).

  2. Tighten the drag completely so the reel only turns one direction.

  3. Test the retrieve direction. If it feels right, proceed to respooling.

  4. Attach backing first to the arbor, then connect your fly line, ensuring both wind toward the reel frame for proper line stacking.

Once you've switched retrieve direction, make sure you understand fly line weight for your setup. If you need new Fly Lines for your freshly configured reel, we carry the complete range of weights and tapers.

How to Switch Reel from Left to Right FAQs

What tools do I need to switch my fly reel retrieve?

Switch your fly reel retrieve using only a small flathead screwdriver and a clean cloth. These tools help you remove the clutch bearing clip or cap, flip the bearing, and reinstall it correctly. No special equipment is required; just basic items found in most tackle boxes.

Will switching retrieve direction affect my drag settings?

Switching retrieve direction does not affect your drag system. However, you should re-adjust the drag after respooling because line tension and feel may change slightly during retrieval.

Can I switch retrieve direction on any Wild Water reel model?

You can switch retrieve direction on any Wild Water reel model. All models use a one-way clutch bearing system, whether CNC machined or die-cast, which supports quick and easy switching between left and right hand retrieve.

Should I switch retrieve if I'm teaching my child to fly fish?

You should not switch retrieve immediately when teaching a child to fly fish. Start with whatever retrieve feels natural for them. Children adapt quickly, and retrieve direction can always be changed later if needed.

What's the difference between spool-mounted and spindle-mounted clutches?

The main difference between spool-mounted and spindle-mounted clutches is their location. Spool-mounted clutches sit inside the spool and use a clip or cap. Spindle-mounted clutches attach to the reel shaft with a retaining clip and washer stack.

Can I damage my reel if I flip the clutch bearing incorrectly?

You cannot damage your reel by flipping the clutch bearing incorrectly. If installed the wrong way, the reel simply won’t function. Flip the bearing again to fix the issue without causing harm to the reel components.
